A Practical Guide to Measuring Social Structure Using Indirectly Observed Network Data

چکیده
Aggregated Relational Data (ARD) are an increasingly common tool for learning about social networks through standard surveys. Recent statistical advances present social scientists with new options for analyzing such data. In this paper, we propose guidelines for learning about various network processes using ARD and a template to aid practitioners. We first propose that ARD can be used to measure “social distance” between a respondent and a subpopulation (individuals named Kevin, those in prison, or serving in the military). We then present common methods for analyzing these data and associate each of these methods with a specific way of measuring social distance, thus associating statistical tools with their underlying social science phenomena. We examine the implications of using each of these social distance measures using an internet survey about contemporary political issues. ∗The first three authors contributed equally to this paper. †University of Washington, Department of Statistics and Department of Sociology, Box 354320, Seattle, WA 98195 ‡Unaffiliated §University of Oxford, Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance and Mathematical Institute ¶University of Wisconsin, Madison, Department of Sociology, 1180 Observatory Dr., Madison, WI 53706 ‖Columbia University, Department of Statistics and Department of Political Science, 1255 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10027 ∗∗Columbia University, School of Social Work, 1255 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10027 ††Corresponding author. Dynamic Network Data Envelopment Analysis Model Usage in Measuring and Ranking the Financial Performance of Social Security Hospitals Based on their Size
Background: Measuring the hospitals financial performance in the health care system is of great importance. This is because hospitals with good financial performance can maintain reliable systems and provide necessary resources to improve quality. The aim of this study was to measure, compare and rank the financial performance of social security hospitals based on their size using a dynamic net...

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a method used for measuring the efficiency of decision-making units. Unlike the standard models, which assume decision-making units to be a black box, network data envelopment analysis focuses on the internal structure of these units. Some researchers have developed a two-stage method where all the inputs are entirely used in the first stage, producin...
متن کاملMeasuring the Efficiency and Performance of the Supply Chain with a Three-Stage Structure using Network Data Envelopment Analysis
The globalization of markets and the multiplicity of choices for customers have led to the formation of a supply chain. In supply chain activities, proper evaluation based on criteria can help companies move toward development. A proper system for measuring performance is an important need for effective supply chain management. Therefore, performance appraisal is critical to improving the effic...

The classic data envelopment analysis (DEA) models have overlooked the intermediate products, internal interactions and the absence of data certainty; and deal with analyzing the network within the “Black Box” mode. This results in the loss of important information and at times a considerable modification occurs in efficiency results. In this paper, a Three-stage network model is considered wit...
